Sustainability Policy

All human activity, including the operation of a law office, has an impact on the environment and the natural world. As a Firm, we seek to reduce that impact. Barteaux Durnford has established sustainable office practices. Our team is committed to making daily choices to realize our objectives.

Values & Education

Because the daily actions of each person in the Firm contribute to the success of our policy, all existing staff participate in sustainable practices. All new staff is educated on our values and sustainable practices as part of our orientation process.

Sustainability Coordinator

Our Office Manager is our Firm’s designated Sustainability Coordinator. She ensures our team is trained in our sustainable practices. She receives suggestions and recommendations from lawyers and staff, proposes improvements to Firm management, and maintains high awareness of the Firm’s sustainability policy.

Selective Purchasing

Sustainability is considered in the purchase of supplies, equipment, catering, and services. Examples of our sustainability criteria include: recyclability, biodegradability, recycled content, waste minimization, hazardous-chemical free, energy conservation, resource conservation, organic and locally manufactured products/materials.

Waste Reduction & Recycling

Practices are established to minimize the use of paper, while satisfying security requirements: data storage, printing, copying, internal and external communications, and mailing. Documents are stored and referenced electronically to minimize unnecessary use of paper.

Systems are established to minimize disposables and packaging. We endeavour to reuse equipment and supplies where feasible, maximize recycling of all items possible in the Atlantic provinces, and to choose durable kitchen and catering supplies.

Energy Conservation

Our sustainability policy promotes energy conservation and efficiency in lighting and equipment. This includes the practice of turning off lights, electronics and computers when not in use, and enabling standby modes for idle equipment.

Mindful Travel

Practices are established to reduce business travel where possible and to reduce the environmental impact of necessary business travel.
